The Zoommers chocolate energy truffle recipe is a well kept secret, but the ingredients used represent a collection of some of the best herbs and essences that have been gathered and revered over the ages. These are sourced sustainably from Asia, South America and West Africa.
The Kola Nut tree, drawn from the Malvaceae, or mallow family, is native to the equatorial region of Africa and is in wide use as a stimulant. The nut is chewed for the sake of its high caffeine content and is particularly popular amongst West African Muslims as an alternative to alcohol – although of course its effect is as a stimulant rather than a depressive as is the case with alcohol. It also has occupied a role as a ceremonial substance, being offered to high ranking visitors to both households and regional and national courts.
The general effect of Kola Nut is as a mild stimulant that also induces a pleasant, and equally mild, sense of euphoria similar to other xanthine containing herbs, such as cocoa, coffee, guarana and yerba mate. As a stimulant, Kola enhances physical energy and intellectual alertness. The Kola Nut is also well known for its fat burning qualities.
Another unique quality of Kola nut is its effect as a bronchial dilator, which, although not a recognized treatment, is an aid for asthma and difficult breathing. It of course is of great benefit to cyclists, runners and those simply struggling through their tri-weekly workout at the gym.
The properties of Kola Nut are not widely appreciated in the west, despite it being the principal ingredient in many recognized Cola drinks and beverages, and other energy and health drinks widely marketed.
Siberian and Panax Ginseng
Ginseng has long been recognized for its remedial effects, particularly in Asia, but increasingly in the west in the last half-century. It is one of eleven species of slow-growing perennial plants with fleshy roots, belonging to the genus Panax of the family Araliaceae.
The two principal genus of the Panax exist, that native to North America (Panax quinquefolius) and that native to Asia (Panax ginseng), are both used medicinally in a variety of forms and preparations. The properties associated with ginseng are adaptogens, aphrodisiacs, as nourishing stimulants and in certain instances in the treatment of type II diabetes. It is also recognized as an aid for sexual dysfunction in men. No less important is the recuperative properties of Ginseng, aiding the body recover from illness or other major stresses.
Ginseng root is most often available in dried form, either whole or sliced. The leaf, although not as highly prized as the root, is also sometimes recommended. As is the case with root it is most often available in dried form.
Root Ginseng is also a common ingredient in a variety of western energy products and is bottled in a variety of teas and infusions. It is also not unknown in commercial cosmetic products but has not been proved to have any particular advantage in this form.
This is where a lot of the zoom in Zoommers comes from. Guarana is an attractive climbing plant in the maple family, Sapindaceae, which is native to the Amazon basin and found most frequently, and used most consistently, in the Brazilian rain forests.
The most notable constituent of Guarana is its high caffeine content – higher on average than coffee – which adds all the advantages of cognitive alertness and physical energy – not to mention fat burning – associated with similar plant essences. It is, however, a slightly narcotic stimulant, a beverage of which is traditionally made from the guaran sticks, by grating half a tablespoon into sugar and water and taking it as a tea. Brazilian miners purportedly drink this frequently and believe it to be a prophylactic for many diseases, as well as a most revitalizing draft.
